Examining the vicissitude of Imo State Legislature
Clash of interest between the executive and the legislature is not a new thing in Nigeria political parlance. However it has been brought to the searchlight with recent developments in Imo State Government led by Governor Rochas Okorocha.
On Thursday, Clerk of the House, Chris Duru, was sacked by a motion supported by 22 out of the 27 lawmakers in the State House of Assembly. The motion was moved by majority leader, Lugard Osaju, representing Owerri municipal constituency.
The unabated twist of events was instigated by the disagreement between the governor Imo state and the lawmakers. Inter alia, Clerk, Chris Duru, was believed to have been liaising with the Governor and the Speaker, Acho Ihim, contrary their(lawmakers') interests.
The plenary was conducted under imbroglio and heated atmosphere which gave the premonition of an unexpected conclusion. We should note that it was the first time the House would sit after the feud between them and the governor, Rochas Okorocha, became public knowledge.
One of the lawmakers stated that the clerk, Chris Duru, was growing wings and sees himself as more important than other law makers.
However, some resources said that suspension may not be connected with the ongoing rift between House members and governors over issues surrounding their 2018 budget.
Will these developments vitiate the efficiency of Rochas' led administration?
Will the suspension of Chris Duru ameliorate the House or will it lead to the suspension of any law maker having relationship with the governor?
These are things we should really ponder on as good citzens of Nigeria.
